2025 Good Design Awards are just around the corner

At Whistle Design Group, we believe that great design doesn’t just solve problems—it redefines possibilities. That’s why we’re thrilled about our entry into the 2025 Good Design Awards, our latest collaboration: the Worx+ Grindworx King Series Concrete Grinders.

About the 2025 Good Design Awards

The Good Design Awards is one of the most prestigious and longest-running international design awards in the world, celebrating excellence in design and innovation since 1958. This year’s theme “Rewarding, Defining and Celebrating Better ______.” invites designers to explore what “better” means in today’s world, whether it’s better products, services, systems, or experiences

The 2025 Awards will culminate in a celebration of design excellence at the ICC Sydney on 17 October 2025, following the rigorous judging process that took place from May to July. The program includes a new Concept Design discipline, highlighting early-stage innovations that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Whistle’s Entry: The Grindworx King Series Concrete Grinders

In partnership with WORX+, Whistle Design Group proudly presents the Grindworx King Series—a bold reimagining of concrete grinding equipment. Designed for professionals in the construction and surface preparation industries, the GK-700 and GK-850 grinders combine raw power with intelligent automation and ergonomic finesse.

Key Features of the King Series

  • Split-Chassis Enclosure Design: A modular structure that enhances serviceability, transportability, and control over grinding pressure—improving surface finish and reducing operator fatigue
  • Advanced Automation: Integrated sensors and a 22kW permanent magnet motor deliver real-time feedback and intelligent control, allowing operators to fine-tune performance on the fly
  • Remote Control & Autopilot: The King Series RC models feature a unique radio control system with one-press U-turns and reverse autopilot, bringing cutting-edge tech to mobile surface manufacturing.
  • Human-Centred Design: Every touchpoint—from controls to intuitive access panels—was designed with the user in mind, ensuring comfort, and efficiency in demanding environments.

A New Benchmark in Industrial Design

The King Series made its global debut at World of Concrete 2025 in Las Vegas, where it was met with acclaim for its innovation, usability, and bold aesthetics. For Whistle Design Group, this project exemplifies our commitment to designing for performance, people, and progress

Looking Ahead

As we await the results of the 2025 Good Design Awards, we’re proud to stand alongside other innovators who are shaping a better future through design. The King Series is more than a product—it’s a testament to what’s possible when engineering meets empathy, and form meets function.

PD101 is our series on insights and advice into the less common elements of the Product Development Process. Today we talk about the role of Design-for-Manufacture (DFM) in Industrial Design.

The Crucial Role of Design-for-Manufacture (DFM) in Industrial Design.

In industrial design, creating aesthetically pleasing and functional products is only part of the equation. To truly succeed in today’s competitive market, companies, brands or manufacturers must also consider how easily and efficiently their designs can be produced. This is where Design-for-Manufacture (DFM) steps in as a crucial component in the latter stages of the industrial design process.

At its core, DFM is a set of principles and guidelines that focus on optimizing the manufacturability of a product. It involves considering every element of the design with an eye towards the eventual production process. By doing so, DFM sets the foundation for efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality manufacturing.

The Core Focus of DFM.

1. Minimizing Costs and Maximizing Efficiency.

One of the primary goals of DFM is to reduce production costs without compromising the quality or functionality of the end product. This is achieved by simplifying manufacturing processes, minimizing the number of components, and selecting materials that are readily available and easy to work with. By adhering to DFM principles, companies can streamline production lines, reduce waste, and ultimately increase their profit margins.

2. Enhancing Product Quality.

A well-executed DFM approach goes hand-in-hand with improved product quality. By designing with manufacturing in mind, potential issues that could arise during production are identified and addressed early in the design phase. This preemptive approach leads to fewer defects, less rework, and ultimately, a higher-quality product.

3. Faster Time-to-Market.

In today’s fast-paced business environment, speed is often a critical factor in a product’s success. DFM plays a pivotal role in accelerating the time-to-market for a product. By designing products with manufacturing considerations in mind, the transition from design to production is smoother and more efficient. This means that companies can respond quickly to market demands and gain a competitive edge.

4. Ensuring Scalability.

Scalability is a key consideration for any successful product. As demand for a product increases, companies must be equipped to meet it. DFM ensures that a product can be produced in larger quantities without major redesigns or disruptions to the production process. This scalability is vital for achieving economies of scale and maintaining a competitive position in the market.

5. Collaboration Across Disciplines.

DFM encourages close collaboration between industrial designers, engineers, and manufacturing experts. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that all aspects of the design are considered, from the initial concept through to the final production stages. This collaborative effort leads to a more holistic and well-rounded product design.

6. Environmental Sustainability.

In today’s environmentally conscious landscape, DFM also plays a role in promoting sustainability. By selecting materials and production methods with lower environmental impacts, companies can create products that are not only efficient to produce but also more eco-friendly.

Design-for-Manufacture is a critical component of the latter stages of the industrial design process. It underpins efficient production, cost reduction, enhanced product quality, and faster time-to-market. By considering manufacturability from the outset, companies, brands and manufacturers can ensure that their designs are not only innovative and functional but also practical and economically viable to produce. Embracing DFM is the key to staying competitive in the dynamic landscape of industrial design.
