What is Skunkworks?

Throughout history there have been pivotal moments where small teams of dedicated individuals have come together with a common purpose – to achieve the seemingly impossible.

One of those moments was in 1943. Lockheed Aircraft Corporation was secretly hired by the US Army to build a high-speed jet fighter to counter the growing German threat. The jet needed to be ready in 150 days, fly at 600mph (200 miles faster than the current Lockheed propeller plane) and on a very tight budget.

It seemed like an impossible mission, but the Lockheed team stepped up to the challenge and had the jet ready in 143 days. This event set a standard in making the impossible possible. It subsequently inspired businesses to create small, carefully selected teams, who are cohesive, focused and nimble in their approach – a concept also known as ‘skunkworks’.

Everett Rogers, a Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico, defined skunkworks as an “enriched environment that is intended to help a small group of individuals design a new idea by escaping routine organisational procedures.”

When Is Product Development Hindered In Large Organisations?

Each large business has an established culture and structure which supports its successful growth and output. However, these structures can inhibit successful product development. Here are 5 common reasons:

1. Long chain of decision makers.
Numerous phases of development require approval. This can slow down the creation of new and disruptive ideas that lead to innovation.

2. Employees feel restricted.
Staff must feel independent enough to pursue their own innovative thinking and put forward ideas. This allows creative intelligence in the organisation to flow.

3. Large workload.
Staff have a large workload which limits their ability to be creative.

4. Too many chiefs.
Multiple managers trying to make their mark on a project can slow product development

5. Restrictive processes and rules to protect the business.
Large organisations have a playbook of processes and rules that minimise risk, and ensure company standards are met. However, these processes can become a barrier to innovation.

When large organisations carve out small teams that don’t have to play by these rules. They give themselves a much greater opportunity to be innovative, be faster to market, and gain a significant competitive edge.

In Our Experience, Here’s Why Smaller Teams For Product Development Work Better.

  • Small teams stay focused. Given authority to make decisions, they remain free from multiple layers of management
  • Communication is more streamlined, leading to confident decision-making and quicker actions
  • Individuals can be carefully selected to complement each other’s skill sets. This reduces competing agendas that can take away from the purpose of the project
  • There is a cohesiveness that develops in small teams. A small team builds a unified and common purpose. Therefore, ideas, both good and bad, can be voiced – allowing ideas to flourish into meaningful solutions

Mission Impossible: What Can A Skunk Works Style Approach Achieve In Product Development?

As a fully resourced product design team, we’ve been able to help larger companies innovate with ground-breaking products, strengthen their brand and develop a competitive edge.

We were part of a small, diverse team in the sport medicine sector which included the CEO, software engineers, production designers and engineers. Together we developed a game-changing, patented sport science device which is now sold worldwide.

We’ve also worked within a small team of commercial builders and manufacturers to design and engineer a million-dollar, architectural ceiling feature, in less the 30 days.

Need to speed to market? We’ve been part of a global team including a brand manager in Europe, QC agents in Hong Kong, and a manufacturer in Shanghai. The brief was to get to market within tight buying windows, fulfilling different promotional cycles including Fathers day and Christmas. As a group we were able to design, engineer, manufacture and deliver within just 90 days.

Like All Great Relationships, A Common Purpose Creates Lasting Success.

Over the years of establishing client-designer relationships around the world, we can share our thoughts on what each party should bring to the relationship in order to create successful products. The preparation and work you do before and during the product design process will influence the success of your product in the market. Even though we’ll make it come to life, your role is crucial in ensuring we’re delivering a product that hits the target.

Both the client and designer bring their natural genius to the relationship. From a designer’s point of view, we want to get into the minds of our clients to clearly understand the direction they want to take. We’re open to learning about you, your business, your goals, and the challenges that lie ahead.

As a client, you want to know that you’re about to take a journey with a product development partner who understands how to get the best of your ideas to the market.

Here are our suggestions on what both you and your product designer can bring to the table:

The Client’s Role.
  • Find the right product design team.
Do the research to vet potential designers before beginning the process. Work out whether the designer is a good match, considering personalities, resources, skills, experience and budget.
  • Work with the designer to set clear briefs, timelines and budgets
This is the best way to succeed at achieving your project goals and timelines.
  • Challenge and question the designer.
Ensure design decisions can be justified and are in the best interest of your project.
  • Understand that creating something new, innovative and patentable is a journey.
There will be ups and downs, but if it was easy it everyone would be doing it.
  • Ask questions.
Get clarity and stay on top of the project so that you’re at ease with each stage of the product development cycle.
The Designer’s Role.
  • Acknowledge what the client brings to the table.
After all the client is starting this relationship.
  • Unlock and harness the client’s drive and passion.
The client is the expert in their field and the designer must aim to become an extension of their knowledge.
  • Listen.
The client will possess important information and knowledge that you do not. To benefit from this you just need to ask the right questions and actively listen for clues.
  • Get out in the field.
See first-hand the world the client lives in, to understand what problems you are trying to solve, and to see how the future product will be used.
  • Communicate, Communicate, Communicate!
Always communicate clearly. Prepare clear and compelling presentations to showcase the designs to your client. Remember the client will use your work to provide signoff, secure funding, present to management, investors and other stakeholders. Communicate the challenges that lie ahead and always keep the client informed so that the project can be guided properly.
  • Justify your decision making along the way.
This may be selection of materials, manufacturing methods, suppliers, colours, size, layout and more. At each point it is important to understand why you make design choices and to be ready for the inevitable question “Why?”.
  • Respectfully challenge and question the client.
The client-designer relationship is a two way street. Find out what is really important to the client, and create opportunities to discuss new ideas and new thinking.
  • Share the vision.
Celebrate milestones and be motivated by the client’s success.
Give Us A Call To Find Out More About How We Could Work Together

As experienced product designers and developers, we will use your knowledge and challenge your thinking. We don’t agree with everything you put forward – we’ll question an idea if we feel this will improve its potential for success.

We thrive on seeing our clients’ products come to life, reach the marketplace and be received with delight by the people they’re intended for. It gives us both professional and personal satisfaction to know that we’re helping our clients grow their businesses and succeed in achieving their goals.

We’re in it for the long term and we take great care to keep our client-designer partnership creative, productive and successful. Call us on +61 39561 5810 for a confidential discussion about your product ideas and plans.

Two New Launches for Batavia and Westfalia

This month, we’re seen the market release of not one, but two, mini-saw models from our clients.

Naturally, this has sent us into an state of mini-saw madness! We’ve been running around cutting through anything we can get our hands on; from decorative veneers, to plaster walls and MDF (as long as it’s under 26mm thick). We recommend waiting until January to visit our studio, when we will hopefully have returned to a state of normality in delivering professional product development services.

In all seriousness, we would like to congratulate both Batavia and Westfalia on the release of their respective mini-saw models.

These two projects serve as a great example of developing different aesthetics and themes for different clients at the same time. Whilst a rare occurrence (in this case, they also knew each other!) it does illustrate how designers must be versatile in their creativity and have a thorough understanding of their clients target market.

The Westfalia model is a “precision” saw that required a more conservative aesthetic, and a muted colourway. Batavia’s model demanded a more adventurous, trend-setting aesthetic, with bright colours and metallic accents. The different use of textures and finishes also serves to give each an identity of its own.

See more of the Batavia Mini Saw and Westfalia Mini Plunge Saw in our Portfolio.

You’ll find the Batavia saw available from https://batavia.eu/ and the Westfalia saw available from https://www.westfalia.de/.

With numerous internet-based communication methods available these days, it’s possible to make introductions, build relationships and conduct business from the comfort of a chair at your favourite café. All whilst sipping a mint-infused decaf soy latte (or whichever obnoxious coffee order takes your fancy). Many people start their work day by checking emails or browsing social media. Maybe they’ll have a Skype conference or two after lunch, followed by some WhatsApp or WeChat messaging to see out the day. It’s all so easy that we never have to meet another person face-to-face again, right?… Wrong!

Relationships are the core of every business. Who we work with, and how we work them, is essential to our success. Unfortunately, with all the great interaction tools at our disposal, we can fall into the trap of building relationships from a distance. But long distance relationships are hard work. While we don’t have quantifiable data or a thesis study to back this up, we can say with certainty that face-to-face meetings yield the best results, and make the strongest relationships.

Here are five reasons why:

1. Issues Come To The Forefront

People don’t like to be wrong, admit mistakes or cause panic. When communicating from a distance, they often won’t reveal all the issues they might be facing. Instead, they’ll try to resolve problems alone, hoping to impress others and avoid causing grief. While this approach is understandable, it’s often counterproductive and can result in time and cost blow-outs. By meeting in person, and showing business partners that you are there to collaborate and help one another, you can resolve issues before they become major headaches. After overcoming one or two issues in a friendly and constructive manner, it becomes second nature.

2. Resolutions Are Timely

Email and other text communication is inherently slow when compared to simply speaking to one another. We structure our words carefully and try to convey our thoughts – but they may still be misinterpreted at the other end. In one short, verbal conversation, you can get your message across quickly and clarify any points that weren’t clear. Responses are instantaneous and resolution is more timely.

3. Non-verbal communication Is Important

After many years communicating with customers in China, some of who speak limited English (although they often know more English than we know Chinese), it’s amazing to see what non-verbal communication can achieve. Through hand gestures, facial expressions, prototypes, samples and drawings, you can effectively discuss complex ideas. Additionally, it’s easier to understand the context and mood of the person speaking, leaving less room for misinterpretation.

4. food and drink can promote connection

When meeting in person you’ll often share a meal or a drink together. It may be as simple as a coffee, or a five course dinner with drinks until the wee hours of the morning. Either way, it’s highly likely that you will share a meal or drink with your business partners when meeting face-to-face. People love to dine communally, often eating and drinking with those they are closest to. By extension, when you dine with business partners you promote a friendly, trusting environment. It encourages personal conversation, builds friendship and establishes trust. As a bonus, you can enjoy some amazing dining experiences during work hours!

5. It’s harder to get upset

In general, people want to be liked. They will often be on their best behaviour, and try to make sure the person they’re with feels liked, too. When both parties behave this way, communication flows naturally and it’s easy to get to know each other on a personal level. By comparison, email communication can be taken out of context, and lacks the same code of courtesy that face-to-face communication provides. With the added veil of anonymity the internet offers, it’s much easier for people to see the worst in others, and get upset or offended.

Having said all that, it’s important to note that modern communication methods certainly still have their place in the world. In some instances, a face-to-face meeting may be difficult or even impossible (think international clients). In these cases, Skype, WeChat or other video conference software makes great alternatives. We believe these tools can be used to enhance your communication capabilities, but that it’s important to remember they’re not a substitute for the best tool of all – face-to-face communication.

Why not give us a call to set up a meeting now.

A question that we hear quite often from clients as well as family and friends is “How do I protect an idea?”

It’s a great question. Dealing with confidentiality is part and parcel of successful product development. Without going down the path of spending large sums of money on full patent protection, here are some steps that can be taken by the savvy entrepreneur to minimise risk of idea theft.

1. Non-Disclosure Agreement.

Firstly, anyone you engage on your new idea or invention should sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). This is key to protecting your interests, and we encourage all our clients to have an NDA in place with suppliers, partners or other third parties. There are other agreements that can be drawn up, such as Non-Compete agreements, for any contractors or staff you hire. Your lawyer should be able to point you in the right direction here.

2. Provisional Patent Application.

Secondly, it’s crucial to gain patent protection for your new product or invention. Start the process by filing a Provisional Patent Application. This will effectively protect your invention for 12 months while the patent office reviews the details of your application. This period of time allows for open discussion with manufacturers, assessment of the market, exploration of retail channels, and other commercial activities. Once 12 months has passed, a complete application is filed (should you choose to proceed with patent process). If you don’t file for a complete application, note your provisional patent will lapse.

3. Design Registrations & Trademarks.

Lastly, we recommend that you consider applying for design registrations, to protect the appearance of a product. Trademarks can also be used to protect brands, trade names and logos.

Through our supplier network we can put you in touch with an appropriate patent attorney and can assist in providing technical drawings and artwork as required.
